AWAKENING FROM THE TRANCE OF TRAUMA

A Therapeutic Group
and Disturbed Attachment

Maggie McGuire, Ph.D.
Tuesdays 5:30-7:30 p.m., new group starting September 20, 2011

At the core of our being there is a place of openness. It is a sense of being alive – awake and at peace. When encountering harmful or threatening situations, we instinctively attempt to protect this soft tender spot in the center of our being. Over time, the protective layer becomes the habit of mind that thinks this small hut we have built for ourselves is who we are, and we become disconnected from our wise resourceful center.

Healing is a process that brings awareness to those parts of our body-mind where awareness has been withdrawn and a numbness, a deadness has been left behind. Awakening from the trance of trauma requires attending to the quiet presence and vital sense of being speaking to us from deep within. Tracking the somatic experience - feeling for the qualities of voice, breath, and gesture - guides us to reawaken our core and connect to aspects of the self that have been neglected or exiled. Learning to focus the mind’s attention on the embodied experience – the here-and-now of the physical, emotional and cognitive processing – enables completion and integration of the dissociated experience.

We will work together as a group to develop the skills that support each person in taking responsibility for healing – enabling one’s ability to respond to self and others with sensitivity, understanding and compassion.
